Garcia keeps Pace promise to share Masters lead

CAPE TOWN, 19 January 2017 – A fine three-under-par 69 saw Nicole Garcia move into a four-way tie for the lead with compatriot Ashleigh Buhai, South Korea’s Carrie Park and Kiran Matharu from England in the SA Women’s Masters on Thursday.

The Serengeti pro was delighted with her first round performance as the notorious Cape Doctor showed up in force at Rondebosch Golf Club.

“I’m from Ekurhuleni, so you can just imagine how tough it was for me in that 35 km wind, but now I have a bone to pick with Lee-Anne Pace,” said Garcia, as she watched South Africa’s top golf export birdie the 18th to finish one off the pace.

Garcia and former Protea all-rounder Jacques Kallis lost a friendly match to Pace and her caddie at the weekend and Pace’s condition for a re-match was that Garcia had to keep her company at the top of the leaderboard at this week’s R500 000 showpiece.

“I played out of my socks to get into the lead, so I think Jacques and I have earned that re-match, but she better step things up tomorrow,” jested Garcia.

Garcia stated that she had to depend heavily on her caddie, Ross Veenstra, the nephew of her boyfriend, Sunshine Tour pro Grant Veenstra.

“Ross was an absolute god-send in the wind,” she said. “At first it was tough to trust him when he told me to aim at a bush 50 metres right of the pin, but he read the wind perfectly. When I committed to the shot, it came out just right.

“The approach shots were the toughest, but the greens are in brilliant shape; they are fast and roll very true. I made four birdies and it could have been one or two shots better, but I’m pretty happy with a 69 to start with. I won’t mind too much if the wind blows some more, because today’s performance gave me a lot of positive energy.”

Budai also walked off the course with some confidence after birdies at 16 and 17 earned her a seat on the leaders’ bus.

“I never had the chance to try and win the SA Women’s Masters as a pro, so it’s been on my mind lately,” said Buhai, who was only 14 when she became the only amateur winner of the championship.

“I had a very long break for my wedding and honeymoon, so I was worried about my form. I always enjoy a challenging layout, though, and today positioning and execution was important. There is always room for improvement, but I’m pleased because this start gives me a fighting chance.”

Matharu was at her ball-striking best as she produced the only bogey-free round of the day.

She could have taken the outright lead, but her birdie attempt on the 18th green stayed above ground. After an indifferent start in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge a fortnight ago, the Ladies European Tour campaigner rallied to a third place finish in her Sunshine Ladies Tour debut and she was pleased to get off to a fast start in her second appearance of 2017.

“It’s great to put myself in a good position on the first day,” Matharu said. “I left a couple of short putts out there, but this is a much better reflection of my game. I had just 27 putts, so I’m putting a lot better, too, this week.

“The weather caught me off-guard, though. There wasn’t any rain in the forecast, so I arrived without a rain suit or an umbrella, but it let up pretty quickly. I’m used to the wind, though, because I played a lot of golf in Scotland growing up.”

Matharu’s highlight of her round was a splendid sand-save at 13.

“I hit it into the trees and I had no shot, so I punched out and finished in the sand trap,” she said. “I had a 45-foot bunker shot, which is the hardest in golf, and I hit it to about six foot. That was the best save I made all day.”

Park relocated to South Africa at the age of 13 and played most of her amateur golf for Gauteng North until she turned pro at the end of 2014. The 19-year-old held the number one position on the country’s amateur rankings for more than a year, so teeing it up on the local circuit is no hard-ship for the Seoul golfer.

Having paid her rookie dues on the Sunshine Ladies Tour last year, she would love nothing more than lifted the trophy on Saturday.

“I don’t like to think too far ahead, but I would love to lift this trophy or the SA Women’s Open trophy,” said Park, who erased two early drops with five gains. “It’s like the SA Women’s Amateur and SA Women’s Stroke in amateur golf; it’s the most prestigious titles, so you want your name on the trophy.

“Plus winning this week gives the champion a huge boost in the Chase to the Investec Cup, so there is a lot to play for in the next two days.”

Fortifying Wireless Security Key To A Robust Network

Multiple unidentifiable devices fuelled by Shadow IT create vulnerabilities in enterprise networks.

Paul Williams, Country Manager – SADC at Fortinet

Most organizations think they have their security taken care of but ironically, CIOs today are not accounting for how their network is actually accessed. A single user may be logged on through multiple devices: a phone, a tablet, and a laptop. There could also be myriads of devices on the network that IT doesn’t even know about.

According to Fortinet, the global leader in high-performance cyber-security solutions, this disconnect is driven by Shadow IT – the result of unbridled use of unapproved devices and services on the network. Shadow IT includes consumer or enterprise applications in the cloud, such as file sharing apps, social media, and collaboration tools. There is often no corporate policy or decision to allow this, and most of the time it is unknown by anyone on their IT team.

“The fact is, about 90 percent of employees and guests are connecting to their network wirelessly and yet wireless APs are often less secure than the wired perimeter. The proliferation of devices and applications is posing serious challenges for organizations that need to ensure the protection of their entire network and guard against advanced cyber security threats,” said Paul Williams, Country Manager for Fortinet South Africa. “It is critical that a security solution map users to devices and control access accordingly and accurately.”

Gartner Group predicts that 33 billion endpoints will be connected by 2020, of which the majority of these devices will be wireless. As more and more wireless devices enter the workplace, companies are striving to maintain the security of their wireless networks.

“When it comes to devices in the workplace, one often thinks of smart phones, laptops, and tablets. But today’s wireless endpoints comprise more than those traditional devices. Organizations may also deploy wireless IP cameras, location-based beacons, and other small devices which often are not capable of supporting traditional security solutions. So this means companies have more and more vulnerabilities to protect for the foreseeable future,” said Williams.

The growing number of small devices that are not able to support security is one challenge. But even traditional wireless devices – smart phones, laptops, tablets – can create security gaps due to the number of mobile applications they run, both for personal and professional use. Contact management apps, games, shopping websites, and even legitimate online news outlets may be infected with malware without the user’s knowledge. This can, in turn, affect the enterprise network as a whole. Users sharing their log-in credentials with guests, or not changing their passwords regularly can also lead to security gaps.

Securing business communications, personal information, financial transactions, and mobile devices involves much more than network access control. It also requires actively scanning for malware, preventing access to malicious websites, end-point integrity checking, and controlling application usage. Protecting Access Points (AP)is paramount to a sound wireless security strategy, and to securely extend physical coverage for users. Today’s APs not only need to support high density environments, but also support security features like Application Visibility & Control (AVC), Wireless IPS (wIPS), and Rogue monitoring —all without the loss of performance.

“Companies need a fabric with deeply integrated security systems that share information across all areas, including wired, wireless, VPN, and cloud environments. When the integration is coupled with machine learning capabilities, the system can flag abnormalities more accurately and more rapidly, and coordinate responses between different security deployments. All of this contributes to better response time for organizations in mitigating threats,” said Paul Williams.

Understanding Vehicle Recalls

Yesterday saw the official recall of the Ford Kuga after 47 vehicles reportedly caught alight, while last year 3 million Toyotas were recalled from the South Africa market due to a faulty airbag, which affected 41 million vehicles across the globe.

Recalls are far more common than we might think. Jeff Osborne from Gumtree South Africa says that whether or not a vehicle is recalled is usually decided on a global level, rather than locally.

“More than 50 million vehicles are recalled worldwide every year (or at least, this has been the case since 2014 – virtually double the amount of recalls for 2013 and earlier years) and South Africa has also been affected,” says Osborne.

“Firstly, it’s important to note that a recall does not mean that you should view your car as a death trap –the particular vehicle you are driving might not even have been affected, even if you are driving a brand undergoing recalls. Moreover, a recall is precautionary measure and an indication of potential risk of injury or damage, not a given that the car is faulty. They are intended to fix known problems with vehicles and manufacturers err on the side of caution if they believe a defect of any kind is present,” he explains.

In fact, according to Osborne, the manufacturers are usually the first to initiate a recall. “Most recalls, are voluntary. Manufacturers care about their customers’ safety and will go to great lengths to protect them. In other instances, recalls are negotiated with suppliers by the National Consumer Commission or other Regulators when a safety issue is identified to enforce compliance. The Commission may also order a compulsory recall to protect the public (as per section 60(2) of the CPA, issuing a written notice stipulating the manner in which the recall must be conducted – this is however, a last resort,” says Osborne.

“If you are concerned about the vehicle you are driving, take it to your dealership or service center for a thorough examination of the part that is in question, e.g. coolant leaks (that has been the issue for the Kuga),” says Osborne.

Should a vehicle be recalled, the owner will receive communication that explains the description of the defect, the risk posed, potential warning signs and how the manufacturer will fix the problem along with instructions of how to proceed. “In most cases, you will be asked to set up a repair appointment with your local dealership.”

Manufacturers will try to contact all possible owners affected and will usually provide contact details for owners to proactively reach out as well.

“Being on the recall list does not mean that you are in danger or even that your car will experience the issues described, but it’s best not to take a risk. Make sure that you follow instructions and take your car to approved service centers to handle the issue.”

Consumers who discover a flaw in a vehicle they own can report it to the National Consumer Commission, Provincial Consumer Affairs Offices or similar automotive industry bodies.

“It may seem as though recalls permeate the headlines, but these are testimony to the dedication of automakers to ensure that our roads (and their customers) are as safe as possible.”

GRLite: 42km & 880m

Stage 3:Phantom Pass | GR300: 75km & 1 400m

GRLite: 60km & 800m

The GR300’s new home on the calendar will be the last weekend of April (28-30 April 2017) which will allow you to maximize your time in Knysna as both Thursday the 27th and Monday the 1st of May are public holidays. This means no more rushing up to get to registration on Thursday evening and no more driving home tired on Sunday afternoon. Plus the GR300 is no longer the test of endurance it initially was, for 2017 the popular 2016 routes will be reinvigorated to ensure that the race provides more fun on the trails than it does stern challenges.

That being said the 2017 GR300 will still include the Ultimate Cycling King and Queen of the Mountain climb up the infamous Simola Hill. But it’ll also feature a play-day in the fantastic Garden Route Trail Park! Another new development I’m really excited about is the Enduro King and Queen award. For 2017 there’ll be two designated Enduro sections on each stage, but be warned they might not be short and they might not be all downhill… The man and woman with the fastest accumulated time on the GR300’s Enduro sections will receive a fantastic prize from ‘JBL Audio’ and the bragging rights of being crowned the GR300 Enduro King or GR300 Enduro Queen. I’m hoping this gives the riders with the technical skills, who usually come for the fun riding and the Mitchell’s beer something to target so they can show the race snakes how to really ride singletrack.

Race snakes need not fear though; there’ll be prizes for you too. The main aim of the reinvigorated GR300 is to attract mountain bikers to Knysna and show off the area’s concept of destination mountain biking. Knysna as you all know is #TrailTownSA and the GR300 will once again be showing off the best bits of Knysna’s amazing trail network including the Harkerville trails, the mind-blowing Garden Route Trail Park and the spectacular Phantom Pass singletracks.

If you’re not quite up to the distances of the GR300 we’ll be hosting a slimmed down version again in 2017 dubbed the GRLite. The daily distances are about 20km shorter and the Lite routes cut out the toughest climbs to ensure you get to the finish fresh enough to enjoy the sights of Knysna in high spirits every afternoon. The GRLite is the perfect step-up stage race for riders looking for the next challenge after mastering our ‘Whales & Vlie MTB De Hoop in September.

So book your leave, reserve your accommodation in Knysna and bring your family along for a long weekend in mountain biking nirvana on the 2017 GR300.

See you there,

The Ultimate Ride in the Garden Route. This is no ordinary race!

New Feature: Enduro sections on each stage with an overall King & Queen of the Enduro crowned after Stage 3.
