10 years of the iPhone – and the older models are still as popular as ever

The 29th of June marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the iPhone – and even the earlier models remain as popular as ever.

“The iPhone 5, which was released in 2012, is one of the most commonly searched for and purchased items on Gumtree,” says Gumtree South Africa’s Head of Core, Claire Cobbledick. “It’s not surprising that it was one of the most popular phones ever released by Apple.”

The iPhone 5 received two million pre-orders within 24 hours when it was made available in September 2012. Demand exceeded supply and outsold twenty times faster than its predecessor. eBay.co.uk, the British branch of Gumtree’s parent company, sees 22 searches for the iPhone 5C every minute.

The average iPhone 5 sells for R3300 on the site and there are more than 4000 available at any given time. Used iPhone 6s are currently selling at an average of R8200.

“This is an iconic brand and iconic piece of technology, and demand will remain high for some years,” Cobbledick predicts.

Gumtree.co.za features an iPhone and phone price checker that customers can use to determine the value of their old iPhone.

Some classic muscle cars on show at Classic Car Show

It’s 50 years since the classic Eleanor Mustang shape, the 1967 Fastback, was making huge waves in America.

Brian Joss – Little did anyone realise then that 50 years on, the 1967 GT shape Mustang would be revered world-wide as a car called “Eleanor” after the mean muscle ride used by Nicholas Cage’s character, Randall “Memphis” Raines, in the 2000 film, Gone in 60 Seconds.

In South Africa there are a handful of beautiful Eleanor “clones”, created at great expense using the 1967 Fastback as a base model. Many people assume that these cars are in fact Shelby Mustangs, but this is not the case, although they use many Shelby styling cues.

An Eleanor-look Mustang, with some Shelby styling cues. Picture: Motorpress

The front valance beneath the grille on an Eleanor Mustang is deeper than it is on a Shelby, and the  dual driving lights, positioned close together beneath the grille, are also the work of the stylists on that movie, rather than an original Shelby touch.

The wheels on an Eleanor, too, are different to those of a classic Shelby Mustang. The Eleanor wheels are in fact latter-day, much larger diameter wheels than used on a genuine Shelby Mustang, and the Eleanor rims were patterned to a style made famous by Halibrand, the company that supplied original Cobras with wheels back in the mid-1960s.

An interesting fact about the “Eleanor Mustang Saga” is that, to be 100 per cent historically accurate, the car that first used that name was the bulkier, 1971 Mustang fastback, used in the original 1974 version of the film, Gone in 60 Seconds. This car looked remarkably standard and even ran original-fit hubcaps!

The 2000 Eleanor was styled by an American, Steve Stanford, who cleverly up-dated the original Shelby look to be used on the 11  Eleanors built for the 2000 re-make movie. They were built up by Cinema Vehicle Services and only three were fully functional. The rest were shells used for “beauty” shots.

Once the movie became such a phenomenal global hit, the values of these 11nhistoric “Eleanors” actually  used in the movie went through the roof, and one was auctioned in the US a few years back for a figure of over $1-million.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Gone in 60 Seconds, and the Fast and the Furious movie that followed 2001, set up a revival of the  musclecar, street racing and customising cult that has ballooned into a world-wide passion amongst youngsters, and continues to this day.

The interest in muscle cars continues to gain a head of steam world-wide, while other smaller European cars, such as Subarus, hot Hondas and Golfs have also attained cult-status amongst the youth.

This will be evident at t he Classic Car Show on July 9 at Nasrec, south-west of Johannesburg, in both the classic and Musclecar sections in Hall 5, up on the platform near the old off-road track and in the lower section devoted to the traditional Jap vs German display area, where the accent is on huge sound systems, massive wheels and even bigger turbochargers!

Traditionally the Classic Car show has drawn a massive muscle car entry that not only includes Mustangs of all varieties, but rival competitors such as Dodge Challengers, Dodge Chargers, Chevy Camaros, Pontiac Firebirds and GTOs and the larger pre-ponycar examples of Musclecardom, such as full-sized Chevys and Fords.

The custom pick-up truck contingent is another area of customising that continues to spiral, so expect to see many never-before-seen pick-ups of the Chevy and Ford variety at Nasrec on July 9.

The Classic Car Show is a bi-annual event at Nasrec now in its sixth year of running. Car exhibitors can enter the grounds as early as 7 am from Gate Two, and the driver of each classic car will gain free entry.

Entry fee to the show is R80 each and R20 for children under 11. There will be a host of family-type entertainment on hand as well, including live music and helicopter rides at R150 for a short flip.

There will be a beer garden and a mini-prawn festival at the show, and Halaal food will also be on sale.

Peugeot’s 3008DKR Maxi entry for Dakar Rally to make its debut on the Silk Way

Following two victories on the epic Dakar Rally in 2016 and 2017, Peugeot Sport reveals the successor to the Peugeot 3008DKR that conquered South America back in January: the racing version of Peugeot’s new SUV 3008 that was named as the 2017 ‘Car of the Year’.

Brian Joss – The new Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi is – as the name suggests – bigger: with a wider track designed to help it conquer the gravel roads, dunes and mountains of the most famous endurance rallies in the world.

The new car is 20 centimetres wider than its illustrious predecessor, due to the suspension track on each side being increased by 10 centimetres. To achieve this, the upper and lower wishbones are new, as well as front and rear track rod ends and driveshafts. As a result, the stability and dynamics of the car are improved, expecting increased performance.

The new Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi: gearing up for the Dakar. Picture: Motorpress

This latest evolution designed by Peugeot Sport’s engineers is still undergoing development, but will make its debut on the 2017 Silk Way Rally that goes from Russia to China next month in the hands of nine-time world rally champion Sebastien Loeb, who finished second on the Dakar this year and is contesting the Silk Way Rally for the second time.

He will be joined on the adventure, which runs from July 7-22, by team mates Stephane Peterhansel and last year’s Silk Way Rally winner Cyril Despres:

but they will be driving the current specification of Peugeot 3008DKR, as seen locking out the Dakar Rally podium earlier this season.

Carlos Sainz, the fourth member of Peugeot’s ‘dream team’ that will reunite to tackle the Dakar again next year, has also helped to develop Peugeot’s newest off-road challenger, with the Spaniard’s experience proving to be crucial.

Loeb’s role on the Silk Way Rally will be to assess the latest evolutions brought to the new car, in order to steer the development direction.

However, as team director Bruno Famin points out, there can only be one overall objective on this arduous 15-day event: victory.

Bruno Famin, Peugeot Sport Director, said: “As soon as we crossed the finish ramp of the Dakar in January, we started to work on the next generation of car to take on this monumental challenge. Of course, there’s only one thing more difficult than winning and that’s carrying on winning, against very strong opposition. That’s why our engineers have a mission to continually improve the car, using their know-how to constantly raise the level and give our drivers the best chance of success. The latest evolutions we have brought to the car improve both stability and performance. Sebastien Loeb will be the driver giving our Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi its competitive debut on the Silk Way Rally, after a number of test sessions that have been carried out already by all the drivers. The data that will now be collected in real competition will help us define the definitive specification for next year’s Dakar.”

According to Sebastien Loeb, Team Peugeot Total driver, the car is much more stable now that it is wider, and so it feels a bit different to drive. “In the very narrow and technical parts that does mean it’s more cumbersome of course, but in terms of stability and driving it’s definitely a step forward. The car has less of a tendency to roll on its suspension now, so that gives you more confidence to attack and get it sideways. I’d say the strongest point of the Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi is the off-road ability that it has. With its wide track and big wheels, it can go more or less anywhere.

It’s maybe not so agile on stage-type roads: that’s more the territory of four-wheel drive cars. But the advantage of our car is the fact that it can tackle anything, especially the dunes.”

Carlos Sainz, Team Peugeot Total driver, said that the car felt good in testing it and it’s definitely an improvement over the previous one.

“I feel we’ve made some steps forward. The main change is obviously a wider track, which should allow us to push a bit more in the corners, and the car also feels more stable on fast and rough gravel roads. After a few years, improving the package always becomes harder but the work that Peugeot Sport’s engineers do is great and I obviously try to help as much as possible. It’s fantastic to see how our engineers try to extract the maximum possible all the time, and how they immediately think of the next steps just as soon as one Dakar has finished.”

WESSA Eden July Newsletter and more

Dear Friends of the Environment,

who would have thought last month that so much tragedy would strike before sending out the July Newsletter …

We are all distraught by the havoc wreaked on people’s lives through the enormous force of fires along the Garden Route.

Mossel Bay had 10 separate fire sites on the same day that Knysna suffered so badly, and there, too, people were evacuated fearing the worst.

In the aftermath, the discussions pertaining to the causes of this disaster and the way ahead are starting up.

In addition to the Newsletter I have attached:-

WESSA_Eden_Newsletter_July_2017

a text from EWT with comments by Dr. Tony Rebelo of SANBI

Comments on Endangered Wildlife Trust statement on the Knysna fires 15 June 2017

an article on the Brenton Blue Butterfly Reserve which was also burnt out

WESSA Eden Layman’s guide to local IAPs per 21 June 17

and the prophetic article by Cowling et al published in Veld & Flora in September 2009.

Cowling_2009 How no man’s land is every man’s problem

Steve Gettliffe no longer has his computer and database, so I have loaded all WESSA Knysna & Plett members onto my database to send this Newsletter out to you directly.

PLEASE would Knysna/ Plett members send a brief e-mail to Steve so that he can start his database and address book again.

And if Lakes Bird Club members would do the same that may make his life a little easier.

To assist the botanical layman, we have compiled a leaflet giving information on the 15 most prevalent Invasive Alien Plants in the George area. We hope many of our readers will find this useful. And DO attend our next event on 29 July when Gabriel Scholtz, SAN Parks will share his knowledge and expertise on this very topic. Details in the Newsletter.

With best wishes particularly to all of you affected by the fires,
