Van Zyl set for final season of XTERRA Lite

Up-and-coming off-road triathlete, Ruan Van Zyl will be seen in action at all three Fedhealth XTERRA Lite races in 2017 (Buffelspoort, Nelson Mandela Bay and Grabouw) before moving on to the Fedhealth XTERRA (long course) in 2018.

Van Zyl made his XTERRA debut in 2013 at the Fedhealth XTERRA Lite Buffelspoort.   “I love the XTERRA vibe,” says Van Zyl.  “XTERRA is a lifestyle and a healthy one at that.  It tests your body to the limits.  Being under-19, this will be the last year that I will be able to compete competitively in the XTERRA Lite.  Out of the three events, XTERRA Buffelspoort is my favourite.  It’s always been good to me.  It’s my track, my backyard.”

“The XTERRA Lite is definitely a good introduction to the sport of XTERRA,” continues Van Zyl.  “Entrants get the full experience of racing XTERRA, but just on a shorter course.  Although I really enjoy the XTERRA Buffelsport mountain bike leg, the trail run course is also amazing and I would recommend it to anyone, even if it’s just to walk it.  I have not yet raced at XTERRA Nelson Mandela Bay, so I am really looking forward to it.  XTERRA Grabouw is the highlight of the year as it’s the qualifier for the World Championship.  The route is always challenging, but memorable.  My goal is to win all three XTERRA Lite races.”

‘Monsieur Dakar’ Stéphane Peterhansel sets new record at 2017 challenge

Thirty years after its initial Dakar Rally success in 1987, Peugeot provided another demonstration of its know-how with an assertive one-two-three finish on this year’s event in South America.

Brian Joss – Peterhansel/Cottret, the most successful crew in the event’s history, flew the French tricolour high and proud as they steered their Peugeot 3008DKR over this year’s challenging route which included high-altitude running, tougher navigation and appalling weather. The 2017 rally turned out to be a close, drama-packed affair with numerous leader changes and exceptionally small gaps at the order’s sharp end from start to finish.

The Peugeot 3008DKR: Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret produced a near-perfect run. Picture: Motorpress/ Peugeot

They say 13 is unlucky for some, but Stéphane Peterhansel is unlikely to subscribe to that theory now that he has beaten his own record and taken his personal tally of Dakar Rally wins to 13 in total (six on two wheels, seven on four wheels). Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret produced a near-perfect run this time round to clock up their seventh success together, allowing the latter to register a new record for co-driver victories.

Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena demonstrated impressive progress on only their second Dakar Rally outing. In addition to emerging as the fastest crew of the fortnight, they combined shrewd pace management with strong navigational skills. Their chances of victory took a blow on Day 4, however, when an engine issue cost them 26 minutes, proving cruelly decisive in the final reckoning. The Franco-Monegasque pair ended up second overall for the second year running and posted the highest number of fastest stage times (five from 10).

After coming seventh overall in 2016, Cyril Despres and David Castera shared the Dakar Rally’s podium celebrations for the first time on four wheels after previously securing five and three bike victories respectively. The crew of the N°307 Peugeot 3008DKR also recorded their first fastest time in the car category and even appeared at the top of the provisional leader board on the evening of Day 4 after one of the 2017 event’s most selective stages, hinting that there’s still plenty more to come from the French pair.

After providing further evidence of their speed, Sainz/Cruz were in the process of easing into the provisional lead when they were unfortunately eliminated. Damage sustained by the N°304 car in a series of rolls on Stage

4 proved too much for the mechanics to repair within the authorised time and the Spaniards were forced to hand in their timecard at the bivouac in Tupiza.

The Peugeot 3008DKR successfully took over the baton from last year’s winning car – the Peugeot 2008DKR – to make an immediate mark on the world’s toughest cross-country rally. The two-wheel drive car warded of its all-wheel drive opposition to reveal the value of the technical configuration chosen by Team Peugeot Total. In spite of unfavourable changes to the regulations (bigger air restrictor), work on the car’s engine and suspension in recent months paid big dividends. At the same time, the switch to a body shape derived from that of the Peugeot 3008 SUV permitted an aerodynamic package which favoured high top speeds.

Team Peugeot Total’s one-two-three finish on the 2017 event isthe latest in a long list of Dakar Rally successes for the brand. It is Peugeot’s sixth overall victory and its second podium lockout from seven participations.

Peugeot’s Dakar record: 1987 : 1 st, Vatanen/Giroux (205 T16 Grand Raid);

1988 : 1 st, Kankkunen/Piironen (205 T16 Grand Raid); 1989 : 1 st and 2nd, Vatanen/Berglund (405 T16 Grand Raid) and Ickx/Tarin (405 T16 Grand Raid);

1990 : 1st, 2nd and 3rd, Vatanen/Berglund (405 T16 Grand Raid), Waldegard/Fenouil (405 T16 Grand Raid) and Ambrosino/Baumgartner (205 T16 Grand Raid); 2016 : 1 st, Peterhansel/Cottret (2008DKR) and 2017 : 1st, 2nd and 3rd, Peterhansel/Cottret, Loeb/Elena and Despres/Castera (3008DKR) Bruno Famin, Peugeot Sport Director, Team Manager Peugeot Total, said, “After such an emphatic win, it’s obviously been a positive event for us. We got three cars onto the podium, an accomplishment Peugeor that everyone at Peugeot Sport can be proud of. The 3008DKR won the Dakar at first attempt, so there’s every reason to be pleased with the jobs performed by everyone in the team, from the mechanics to the crews. Everybody feared this year’s Dakar – justifiably in my opinion. This tension led the members of the team to work even more closely together and the reward is a fantastic overall team result. As far as the car is concerned, the biggest step forward was its reliability. We didn’t have any mechanical issues, with the exception of a small problem which, it can be said, deprived Loeb an Elena of the win.”

Three Toyota Hilux vehicles finish in top 10 at Dakar

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Dakar 2017 drew to a close in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires at the weekend,  after Stage 12 of the world’s toughest motor race.

Brian Joss – The event, run over 13 days in Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina, saw three SA-built Toyota Hilux race vehicles finish in the top 10. Nani Roma and navigator Alex Bravo (#305) were the top-placed Toyota crew, while newcomer Conrad Rautenbach and navigator Rob Howie (#320) finished in ninth place overall.

Giniel de Villiers and navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz (#302): up and down event for Toyota pair. Picture: Quickpic

It was an up-and-down event for Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Giniel de Villiers and navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz (#302), who trailed Stage 12 winner, Sebastien Loeb (Peugeot) by just 30 seconds on the final stage of the event, posting the third-fastest time of the day. In the end this was more than enough to hold off Orlando Terranova (MINI), who mounted a late charge to challenge De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz for their fifth position in the overall standings on Stage 11.

“We knew ‘Orly’ was close, and we both raced as hard as we could on Stage 11,” said De Villiers after completing the grueling race in Buenos Aires. “But I ended the day holding onto a small advantage, and on Stage 12 we managed to extend that and retain our fifth place overall.”

Stage 12 signaled the end of Dakar 2017, which saw Stephane Peterhansel notch up his 13th Dakar victory – 6 on motorcycles, and 7 in the car category. Teammate and multiple WRC champion, Sebastien Loeb was in second place, with Cyril Despres, also in a Peugeot, rounding out the podium. They were followed home by Roma and De Villiers, the best of the non-Puegeot crews.

Toyota Gazoo Racing SA started the 2017 edition of the iconic motor race with a charge. Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah and French navigator Mathieu Baumel won the short opening stage of the race convincingly, while De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz recorded the fifth-fastest time on Stage 1. This set both crews up perfectly for the first true Dakar stage.

Stage 2 brought the expected fireworks, with Al-Attiyah/Baumel leading the stage for extended periods, before settling for the second-fastest time on the day. De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz maintained their position, finding their stride and giving the Toyota Hilux a great outing.

But then came Stage 3, and massive disappointment for Toyota Gazoo Racing SA. Al-Attiyah/Baumel started the day with vigour, and set the pace through most of the long and tricky stage. They looked set to record a second stage win for Toyota on Dakar 2017, but the Dakar gods had other plans. The Qatari driver ran wide near the end of the stage, and a jagged hole on the side of the road ripped the right rear wheel from car, severely damaging the suspension in the process.

“We are bitterly disappointed,” said Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Team Principal, Glyn Hall, at the time. “but in the end there’s nothing we can do. Nasser pushed as hard as he could, and we were very happy with the performance of our Toyota Hilux. But this is the Dakar, after all, and these things happen.”

With Al-Attiyah/Baumel out of the race, all attention shifted to De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz, as well as fellow Toyota crew Nani Roma and navigator Alex Haro (#305). But Stage 3 also brought disappointment for De Villiers, who last won the race in 2009.

“The stage was tricky from the start,” explained De Villiers, “and we lost a little bit of time with navigation in the beginning. But then we knuckled down and got on with the job at hand, taking back time bit by bit.”

The plucky Stellenbosch boy was putting in a solid performance, until a fuel pressure problem halted his charge. De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz were forced to stop and work through the problem, eventually losing the best part of thirty minutes in the process. This tumbled them down the order, and it was an uphill battle from there.

“But Giniel and Dirk are fighters, and they simply put their heads down and carried on,” said Hall of their performance. “In the end they finished the race in fifth place, after fending off a hard charge from MINI’s Orlando Terranova on the penultimate stage.”

At the same time, Roma/Bravo managed to fly the flag for Toyota, maintaining a fourth position in the overall standings throughout the bulk of the race. The pair was the fastest non-Peugeot in the field, and reported no technical issues with their Toyota Hilux throughout the race.

“At times we may have been a bit too cautious,” said the Spanish driver from the end podium in Buenos Aires. “But on the Dakar it is important to pace yourself, and make sure you reach the finish. We managed not only to finish, but to finish as the fastest Toyota Hilux in the field.”

Zimbabwean driver, Conrad Rautenbach, paired with experienced navigator Rob Howie for Dakar 2017, completed the grueling race in ninth place overall. This was a stellar performance, in Rautenbach’s first Dakar Rally, and won him the Rookie of the Year award. His finishing position meant that three SA-built Toyota Hilux race vehicles completed Dakar 2017 in the top ten.

“Dakar 2017 will be long remembered for a variety of reasons,” said Hall after the race. “The extreme weather certainly played a massive roll, with stages cancelled and modified, reducing the competition’s overall race distance significantly.”

At the same time, the extreme altitudes of the Bolivian Altiplano counted against the normally aspirated Toyota V8 engines, and route director Mark Coma’s latest route truly tested the navigators as much as the drivers.

“To us at Toyota South Africa Motors, taking part in the Dakar is the ultimate showcase of the legendary reliability and toughness of the Toyota Hilux,” explained Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota SA Motors.

In addition to the three Toyota Hilux vehicles in the top ten, 24 other similar vehicles completed the race – more than any other manufacturer. Toyota also took top honours in class T2.2 for modified diesel vehicle, where the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 GX crews finished first and second in class. The Hino crews also proved their mettle once again, by finishing first and second in class T4.2 for modified trucks.

Despite the tough conditions, President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors, Andrew Kirby, who attended the finish podium in Buenos Aires, was positive about Toyota’s results. “In the end this is the ultimate challenge, because it is undoubtedly the toughest motor race in the world.  We may not have achieved what we set out to do this year, but we can certainly be proud of our performance. We were first in class T1 4×4, proving once more just how tough our Toyota Hilux is in these extreme conditions.”

For every bottle of Generosity Water purchased at Up The Creek 2017, two people in a developing country will receive water for a month. Each bottle has a QR code that can be scanned to see which community will benefit from your purchase.

Rooibos Day aims to set a new world record!

Fun for everyone at the first National Rooibos Day

The Rooibos plant is one of South Africa’s most prized indigenous plant species and on Monday, 16 January 2017, the first National Rooibos Day will be hosted to celebrate South Africa’s Rooibos treasure. The event will be held in Clanwilliam, the Rooibos capital of the world. The festivities are to take place at the Augsburg Landbou Gimnasium on Jan Mostert Park, from 18:00 to 22:00. The gates will be open from 17:00. National Rooibos day will be opened by MP James Vos, shadow minister of tourism. Admission is free of charge, but hurry! If you are one of the first 500 visitors, you will receive a coupon which you can trade for a product, drink or a gift at any of the participating stalls.

If you’ve always wanted to be a part of something big, listen up! National Rooibos Day wishes to soar to new heights by setting the record for the most people drinking Rooibos tea together in one place. Rooibos tea lovers can look forward to stalls with products by Rooibos Limited, Khoisan Tea, Kings, Carmien Tea, Ou Huis and Biedouw Valley Rooibos.

“We hope to set a record on the 16th of January, but most importantly we want to celebrate the wealth of Rooibos that our country can call her own” says Marietjie Smit, one of the organisers of the event.

It is quite possible to drink tea all day long. However, for those who seek refreshment elsewhere, the craft beer brewery Stellenbrau will present their Rooibos-infused beer. It doesn’t stop with beer! Audacia will be ready to entice you with their Rooibos Wine, whilst Klawer Wines will no doubtedly crown it all with their African Ruby Vermouth. There will also be Rooibos slush puppies and Rooibos ice tea with a “kick” for those who are feeling mischievous.

This is a day of celebration, and celebration requires good food. Don’t miss out on the old favourites that will be available on the day. This includes roosterkoeke and boerewors, smoked snoek, chicken salad (for the health conscious), curry and rice with Rooibos-stewed fruits and last but not least, a delectable Rooibos steak burger. Remember to leave some space for a sweet treat afterwards. You can choose anything from Rooibos ice-cream, rusks, cookies, fudge and wait for it… filled pancakes.

“Visitors can expect an exciting variety of merchants, products and exhibits. The only prerequisite? Everything must be related to Rooibos!”, says Sanet Stander, co-owner of Rooibos Tea House and co-founder of the Rooibos Route. Thus, you can expect to be treated with all things Rooibos on the day of the event.

There will also be interesting displays by Kaap Agri: Graafwater on tea-planting machinery and tractors, while AFGRI Equipment will be showcasing John Deere farm implements and tractors. For those intrigued by the beauty enhancing factors of Rooibos, Annique will showcase their range of Rooibos-based beauty products. On a day like this, where people come together, it is important to be grateful and also aware of the struggles some people face. For this reason, CANSA will broadcast their message to create awareness on the day.

Runaway victory at Cape2Rio

The yacht Runaway from Peru was first to cross the line at the 2017 Cape2Rio presented by Maserati. Owned and skippered by Hector Velarde, Runaway finished early on Saturday, January 14, 13 days after setting sail from Table Bay in Cape Town.

German yacht Black Pearl was second to finish almost a full 24 hours later in the early hours of Sunday 15 January. The rest of the fleet was still at sea at the time of writing. Based on the latest positioning reports, South African entrant Lion of Africa Vulcan should be the third boat to finish.

Vitor Medina, commodore of the Royal Cape Yacht Club, the hosts of the Cape2Rio, was thrilled to see the first two boats home. “This is a special event and it’s always special to see the first yachts home. Crossing the Atlantic is truly something to behold; congratulations to Runaway on a thrilling performance in their debut Cape2Rio and well done to Black Pearl for pushing them all the way.”

Runaway, along with Black Pearl and Lion of Africa Vulcan, was one of the favourites to take line honours at the Cape2Rio. Following a decisive move when confronted with a low pressure system midway through the race, Runaway was able to move clear of Black Pearl and Lion of Vulcan Africa and stay in the lead until the finish.

While Runaway has taken line honours convincingly, handicap honours will only be announced once all yachts are safely in Rio.

Runaway crew member Steve Dodd said that the 3500 nautical mile ocean crossing was a good race from start to finish, with a lot of cat and mouse and ‘follow the leader’ in the early stages.

“We all do a lot racing, and compete in various events,” said Dodd, “But this is the one true ocean crossing. To cross the Atlantic, to go from one continent to another, that’s pretty special. It’s an accomplishment to be proud of as there are not many opportunities to do something like this.”

Black Pearl’s owner and skipper Stefan Jentzsch echoed Dodd’s sentiments. “It was exhausting to be honest and maybe not exactly what we are used to, but it was interesting, exciting and challenging to be a part of this iconic event.”

The two finished crews both commented on the demanding nature of the 2017 Cape2Rio, with Black Pearl navigator Mark Lagesse calling it one of the toughest Cape2Rio races he can remember and not a ‘typical Cape2Rio’. “The first three days were brutal out of Cape Town, in the middle days we had lots of rain, and then the last three days were also tough. We also had a leak, and the faster we went the quicker the water came in from the leak, so we spent as much time bailing water out as we did sailing.”

The line honours success will be especially sweet for Runaway and her crew, who arrived in Cape Town in the best possible shape for the Cape2Rio. Prior to the event the crew sailed in the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Race (1300 miles) and the Pacific-Cup Race from San Francisco to Hawaii (2000 miles). Crew member Tom Corkett said their main race ambition was to get to Rio in the best possible time – which they did with the chasing pack far back in their wake.

At the start of the race competitors had to contend with heavy winds, then it was a low pressure cells which hampered progress. “We are used to frontal systems not low pressure systems,” said Dodd, “so it required some quick thinking from the team when confronted with what we thought was a very ‘low’ low. Luckily we have sailed a lot together and work well as a team. Crossing that first low was where the game changed. I think we turned 45 degrees and that gave us an 80 mile lead. Lot of guys went south or north (like Vulcan) but we were able to punch through and that allowed us to get ahead.”

With 25 years of sailing together, and 6000 nautical miles sailed in the last 11 months alone, it seems that preparation and experience was the answer for a Runaway victory.

“Congratulations to Runaway on their line honours success,” said Brad Graaff, Operations Manager for European Automotive Imports – South Africa (EAI-SA), the importer of Maserati to South Africa. “We are proud of your performance and to be the presenting partner to Cape2Rio. We hope you enjoy this special moment of success.”
